Auður, daughter of the Viking chieftain Ketill Flatnose, grows up in the Hebrides, high-born and fiery. Her whole family is pagan, but when she meets the monk Gilli she is drawn both to him and to his message of the White Christ. Once of age she is given in marriage to Óláfr the White, king of Dublin in Ireland. Their bond is passionate but stormy, and her friendship with Gilli costs her dearly, in an age when Norsemen seized the islands off Scotland, raided the western seas and fought bloody battles among themselves.
