Early in the 1800s, on a winter's day by the Oder where Prussia meets Poland, a newcomer who hopes to make a living from this harsh soil lifts his wife's coffin off his wagon; she did not survive the trip. As he hacks at the iced-over ground to bury her, his spade meets a corpse, a Prussian cavalryman preserved by the cold. Such a find suggests that the earth holds many more dead, and from it grows the chronicle of a hostile stretch of Central Europe, crossed again and again by armies and upheavals, together with the doomed story of the one who tells it, a voice that is many people at once, like the history of Europe itself.
