Seized from her Darfur village at seven, Bakhita endures slavery's horrors. Sold in adolescence to an Italian diplomat, she finds an Italy of want and exclusion. Freed by a famous Venetian lawsuit, she takes vows, survives two wars and fascism, and serves poor children, drawing strength from earliest memories.
