Caterina, called Nina by her friends, is on her first important job: the engineer in charge of building an embankment at Spina, a small settlement on the upper Po plain. Young, from Sicily, and the only woman among men, she faces every kind of difficulty: technical obstacles, environmental protests, responsibility for the workers' safety. Day after day everything becomes a building site, her love life, her ties to the island she comes from, her place in the office. At times she feels she is vanishing into the fog, and is tempted to give up. Slowly the anonymous people around her, surveyors, councillors, crane operators and workers' widows, take on faces.
