Late in the 21st century, global warming has flooded and chilled much of Europe but spared Bulgaria, which draws settlers from everywhere and has broken up into feudal micro-territories held by sects, ecologists, technocrats, smugglers, occultists and other groups at war with each other. The Bulgarians themselves have vanished, but their name and culture live on among the newcomers. In 2097 Pempo, a naive, Candide-like young man, and Marion cycle to Samograd, an isolated autonomous town at the edge of the country, to see what is left of their great-grandparents' house. There Marion disappears and Pempo is kidnapped by the Transmentalists, who want to save humanity by reuniting people with long-forgotten Reason.
