Peace has come, rationing is easing, and a newly appointed pastor arrives with his wife at a parish of islands so remote that only boats, steered by people who know the dangerous skerries, can reach it. The parish is famed for its singing, the church on its hill guides sailors in, and the young couple, very much in love, plan to build a life there among the rectory's livestock, with a sexton and a churchwarden to help. The islanders are busy too, raising a clinic and a bridge, while fishermen come back from selling herring in Helsinki looking prosperous. Then winter freezes the sea into a road linking one island to the next. The pastor, heading home to his lamplit windows, has his own thoughts; the postman, who crosses that ice, knows how old and strong the powers out there are.
