Early 1950s: winter rain and cold over a forgotten village far in the south. Eizik drives a truck and works hard, a gruff man with one obsession: the stone marking his little son's grave will not stay put. However often he hauls it up, wedges it, sets it in cement and touches up the child's name in black, the paint fades and the stone subsides again. The local monument mason, Halbertal, has a project of his own: having heard that Tel Aviv's Herzliya Gymnasium faces demolition, he means to recreate the school behind his house out of broken marble and discarded gravestones. Yitzhak, the ritual slaughterer who doubles as the village's rabbi and mystic, keeps meeting odd omens of his own death. And then a soldier carrying a weapon, Peter Stein, turns up on the outskirts.
