It is night and the orphanage is asleep, all but one girl. Cecilia is sixteen. By day she plays the violin in church, behind a thick grille that hides the young musicians from the congregation; by night she feels lost in total solitude, and secretly writes to the most intimate and distant person of all, the mother who abandoned her. At the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice, where the orphan girls live shut in by decorum and rigid roles, music is for her a dull habit. Then a new composer and violin teacher arrives, a young priest with a big nose and copper-coloured hair: Antonio Vivaldi, and through her struggle with his music Cecilia begins to find her own way.
