On 26 February 1992, 25,671 residents of Slovenia with Yugoslav citizenship were unlawfully struck from the register of permanent residents, the so-called erasure. Through the childhood, youth and adult life of Mia, the novel follows the Batić family, who were not truly equal even before: the father is from "down there", which shows in one dash too few on a letter of their surname. From an early age Mia thinks about identity and belonging, all the more so when the war begins and new insults such as "Chetnik" appear. In short chapters jumping between present and past, the book portrays a family marked for ever by a baffling legal vacuum: the father, without papers, feels he does not exist, and for years the Batićs cannot visit relatives in Serbia, shop in Austria or holiday on the Croatian coast.
