In the winter of 1944, soon after the coup of 9 September, thirteen-year-old Maria and her mother are driven from their home without warning and interned in the remote village of Kosten. Her father, a public figure from Lovech, a lawyer and one of the deputies who spoke up for Bulgaria's Jews, has fallen to the so-called People's Court. In the autumn of 1988 two school friends, Yoan and Evstati, are sent to the same village on a compulsory work brigade and hear the local legend of the whirlpool: a mere natural feature, or an unknown force that drags innocent victims into its depths? Inspired by real events, the novel moves between 1944–45, the last years of socialism and the present day, where the characters' paths cross.
