Vanja and Milena, the girl whose blue eyes hold the sky and freedom, grow up in a time fit for anything but growing up. The army, strange and dark, and the ever-seductive sea, first uncertain loves and the first burdens of womanhood shape a world in which men write history and girls mature too fast. War and life as refugees stay in the background, behind the half-mythical landscape of childhood, as the novel follows women facing their fears and their fates.
