Lena has been looking for a miracle since kindergarten, where her Russian teacher told her about rainbows and miracles and predicted great things for her, before the teacher was killed by ball lightning. From then on nothing in Lena's life goes the normal way. She befriends the most bullied girl in her class, grows up with a generation of intellectuals who suddenly find the bazaar at the centre of life, and, short of a big enough bribe, studies not philosophy or physics but physical education. Then she realises that no one but her will protect the stray dogs sold to Chinese restaurants, or the disabled people queuing for wheelchairs. All the while she wonders whether God exists and who the woman is who descends from the sky to save the weak.
