On New Year's Eve in Bohinj, a woman out walking her dog comes across a decapitated body in the Jezernica, the stream that flows out of the lake. Taras Birsa, a senior criminal investigator with the Ljubljana police and a sporty man close to fifty, happens to be driving back from a visit to friends and gets caught up in the case. The investigation, tense throughout its more than five hundred pages, washes up several more bodies, brings a young female colleague to the local police station and a touch of romance with her, and leads into the world of medical and pharmaceutical lobbies and the drug mafia.
