Ryfka has one aim: to survive. In a hiding place in the rubble of Warsaw after the uprising, she tends the half-conscious Jakub Szapiro, nothing like the gangster who once ruled the capital, and goes out at night to find food, plan an escape and trade money for guns. Szapiro's son Dawid, who survived deportation from the Umschlagplatz, cares little about his father's fate; in his own hiding place he remembers Jakub's pre-war power and judges him the worst man he has met.
