Demyan Lavrentyevich Parkinson, the man who invented a dreadful disease, dies of exhaustion in 1947 in a camp on the Kolyma, under the false name Nikolai Nikolayevich Kuznetsov. Until then he tries, from the vantage point of his strange illness, to change the world around him and to piece together a long-shattered picture of it, fighting the chimeras of true illness and false health whose reversed roles drive the world into revolutions, wars, esotericism and alchemy. The book mixes a short history of Parkinson's life and work, his theoretical and revolutionary writings, and testimonies of famous and less famous contemporaries, including Vladimir Nabokov, in a grotesque that is now a novel, now a history, with scant respect for chronology.
