Gifted

The narrator works as a hostess and lives in a block on the edge of the red-light quarter. When her mother falls gravely ill, she takes her in and begins caring for her. Her mother brought her up alone and, along the way, put out a few books of poems that never found readers. As death fills the air of the room, the daughter's thoughts keep drifting to a woman friend who killed herself not long ago, and around the two of them move the people who live by night.
