A woman receives a task from her son, who is studying abroad: find Zhang Zhan. All she knows is that he was her son's high-school classmate, from another province and a privileged family, sent with his sister to school far from home; that his father was killed in a plane crash just before the university entrance exam; and that no one has heard from him since. Her search produces two irreconcilable portraits. His teachers, his 'exchange mother' and his college adviser describe a solitary, reckless, spendthrift son of officials; at a special school and a cancer ward he is remembered as modest, frugal and devoted to others. In the second half, Zhang Zhan's own letters begin to explain.
