Newly widowed, Ann Mary takes out the forty letters Jithendran sent her some twenty-five years before, along with pieces of the novel he never finished. Jithen wasted his gifts at a firm producing toy monkeys that beat drums, yet his letters map out the past of Thachanakkara, an invented village on the Periyar river in central Kerala, and of the Ayyatumpillis, a feudal Nair household followed from Narapilla’s youth through his children and grandchildren. Through them the story moves from Kerala before independence to the decades after the state was formed, taking in caste, religion, love, communism and the slow transformation of the village.
