Every spring the grandfather has a new funeral portrait taken, until one sitting convinces him that his soul has flown away. Half mad, he digs up trees all along Toon Tree Street in search of a flashlight holding his ancestors' bones, and the family commits him to Jingting hospital, where his grandson Baorun keeps him under control with expert knots and is soon called on to tie up other unruly patients too. There Baorun meets the haughty foundling raised by the hospital's old gardener, known as Fairy, who obeys no one but Liu Sheng, the butcher's son. A date arranged between them goes wrong, and a night in the hospital's water tower sends Baorun to prison for ten years while Liu Sheng goes free. Years later Fairy, renamed Bai Zhen, returns to the street, and the three must face their past.
