The story starts in today's Bosnia, in Bosanski Brod, in a present ruled by the misery of petty survival, hopelessness, polluted air and public life, deep unemployment and broken social ties that nothing of value has replaced. The hero lives from small favours and hustling, looking back on missed chances, a crippled town, unfulfilled loves and burnt-out ambitions. As a boy he was too young to fight in the war but old enough to remember it all. Between personal and generational reckonings, the novel bears witness to how the war began, catching good, ordinary people unprepared and dividing them by the most barbaric criteria, without ever naming the peoples or the leaders involved.
