Lew McLeod has drifted around the Western Australian wheatbelt with Painter Hayes since his mother left him in the older man's care as a boy, taking whatever work comes: shearing, burning charcoal, labouring. Painter is violent, racist and fond of drink, yet loyal to Lew in his own way, and the bond between them carries the book. When the pair arrive to shear for John Drysdale, Lew falls for Drysdale's daughter Clara, and trouble starts to brew. In alternating chapters a pregnant dingo searches the bush for prey, hunter and hunted at once. The novel lingers on the work of the woolshed, on the land and its animals, and on the harm that love and friendship can both do.
