Raimundo grew up on a farm in the backlands and was kept out of school because his labour was needed from childhood. In his youth he loved Cícero, until their secret came out and was crushed with violence. Cícero vanished, leaving only a letter that Raimundo, unable to decipher a word, has carried for half a century. Now an old man of seventy-one, living far from his relatives and from the sertão, he finally sets about becoming literate. As he does, the novel returns to the quarrels of his family, the long concealment of whom he desired, and the people he came to know once he had fled and lived as a wanderer.
