In Prekmurje, among vineyards, a river and a small town, the successful winegrower Cveto Golja learns that Liza, a Russian former bar dancer who moved to his estate six years ago, is pregnant. Overjoyed, he buys a round for the drinkers at the village inn, who promptly sow the seed of doubt: perhaps the child is not his. Golja hires a hopeless detective, buys a pistol and chases his suspect through the woods, watched by the narrator, an old school friend of Golja's who is hiding there with his own lover. Around them a rural comedy plays out with a forgetful priest, a crafty innkeeper, a pompous policeman and a psychiatrist, alongside two other couples being tested.
