Ľútostivosť

Five prose pieces, the title story among them along with 'The House on Acacia Street', 'Cemetery Quarter', 'Threat' and 'Olive-Green Jacket', depict hard moments in the lives of ordinary people and the ways they come to terms with them. Illness, danger, loneliness and death recur, and so does the meeting of old age with youth and childhood. Through the protagonist's memories, family bonds also bring out the distance between western and eastern Slovakia. The endings let in uncertain, transcendent elements, and the comic tone familiar from the author's earlier work is not missing.
