People have always left this country, the narrator says, but he has gone only for a month. A Belgrade writer from a circle that never had money for travel and drank late into the night instead, he spends a fellowship stay on Lake Como, below the Alps. Expected to play the part of a public writer in the wider world, he keeps to his own intimate life: lying on a bench on a hill called Tragedia, drawing a mountain and a bird in a small notebook, drinking, and drifting towards nature, the village below and its local people. The book is a contemplative, diary-like chronicle of that month, honest and self-mocking.
