Tbilisi, the 1980s. Irina Nozadze, daughter of a soap-factory worker and a journalist at the paper 'Chronicles of Soviet Georgia', spends her days copying bulletins on farm output and the socialist republic's scientific achievements. Nothing happens. Then something does: a failed hijacking, in which four young Georgians try to defect to the West, ends in a tragedy that becomes known across the Soviet Union. Determined to investigate with Caucasian stubbornness, Irina lives two parallel lives, one of secrecy and indifference, the other among books and imagination, until the harsh April of 1989, as Chernobyl, Gorbachev's reforms and Georgia's national movement change her idea of herself. The third book of a tetralogy about the Soviet Union.
