The narrator's violent, erratic father boasted of resistance exploits, until the grandfather let slip that the young man had served in German uniform. In 1987, covering Klaus Barbie's trial in Lyon as a journalist, the son learns that his father's judicial file sits in the Nord archives. Police records show a teenage fabulist and con man who changed sides repeatedly, putting on five uniforms and abandoning four armies.
