The novel is set in 1900 in Stanislau, today Ivano-Frankivsk, and written as the diary of Stefania Chornenko, a Ukrainian orphan and servant in the house of Doctor Anger, who took her in after her parents and his wife died in a fire. She grew up with his daughter Adela, half Polish and half German, and now serves Adela and her husband Petro Skolyk, a Ukrainian sculptor of tombstones trained in Vienna. Into this household comes Felix, a child found in Petro's workshop, with hyper-flexible joints and a habit of stealing valuables. The city's cooking, gossip and newspapers of the day surround a tale of love as unfreedom and illusion.
