In a provincial region of pastoral landscapes, still scarred by the latest of its wars, a young woman is murdered outside a safe house. A local journalist sets out to uncover the killer's motives and finds that crime has worked its way into the structures of power, which in turn breed it: cross-border cooperation means shady deals between politicians and criminals. In the seemingly more civilised capital, someone poisons the dog of a retired university professor as a message about his work for human rights. Meanwhile a young woman looks after the animals on a farm. Through characters mostly left unnamed, the novel weaves domestic violence, people smuggling, corrupt power and a society sliding towards fascism together with the deep bond between people and dogs and horses.
