When Luce and Pietro go for one of the last scans before the birth, they are overjoyed. Pietro is even wearing his frayed lucky jumper with green and blue checks. It has taken years to get here, years of anxious calculations with a calendar in hand, sex on command and hopes dashed within a minute. But as soon as little Lorenzo appears on the monitor, the gynaecologist's smile vanishes: Lorenzo is too 'short', something is wrong. Their world tears like tissue paper, and Luce finds herself facing the responsibility of an enormous choice, in an Italy that does little to help women in her position.
