A wandering spirit called Shi, which has lived many short lives, recounts its time inside Ding Yi, a Chinese boy of the later twentieth century who comes of age in the years of the Cultural Revolution. Ding Yi's own story is the backbone of the book, but it keeps branching into others: those of his uncle by marriage, of Yi, of E, of Qin Han, and of Danqing Island. Moving across people, ages and eras, the novel traces how desire first stirs and then shifts between sex, passion and love, and asks where love begins and what it is for, starting from Adam and Eve looking for each other after Eden.
