Rutzi Yaakobi is chief vet at the abattoir in Kiryat Amal and a descendant of Alexander Zaid. She is sent to certify the deaths of calves whose butchered bodies have been laid out on a farm, a bloody sight that upsets her, and soon finds that on farm after farm calves are dying strangely. Someone then begins writing anonymous letters to her superiors, claiming she is corrupt and mixed up in illegal slaughter of cows not fit to eat. With her marriage to Shmulik also faltering, her bosses start to wonder whether she can do the job. Rutzi, raised among animals and their killing, struggles with emotions new to her as she drives from cowshed to cowshed and discovers resentment and scheming under the surface of a rural life she thought she knew. Between the chapters, episodes from the country's natural history recall the animals that suffered for the mistakes of Israeli farming.
