April 1988, San Francisco's seedy Tenderloin: in a cheap hotel room lit by pink neon, Valerie Solanas lies on a soiled mattress, dying of pneumonia. Not long before, a hotel employee saw her at the window, writing. The narrator pictures herself in that room with Valerie, amid stacks of drafts, and sets out to reach the woman behind the fury and to understand her own pull towards the legend. Imagining Solanas's life, the book renders squalor and degradation in lyrical prose.
