Ruslan Isakov, an immigrant from Azerbaijan now around fifty, gave up his job as a construction technician years ago and lives detached on a run-down plot in a moshav. Weeks ago two police officers handed him a donkey's rope on a back road, told him to wait, and never returned; since then the animal has stood in his yard. Over eight days in June 2018 the novel follows his care for the donkey, his limited sexual relationship with his only friend, the American Steve, and his growing sense of kinship with the animal. Again and again it returns to a single day in November 1994, when Ruslan, then twenty-six, still lived with his parents, and to events that slowly built towards disaster.
