A few weeks before the end of the war, Countess Margit Thyssen-Batthyány gives a lavish party at her castle in Rechnitz, Austria. Around midnight, guests leave the castle and shoot 180 Jews waiting at the station to be transported on. What exactly happened that night is still unclear. What has this to do with him, the writer Maxim Biller asks her great-nephew, a Swiss journalist. He starts looking for answers. His search takes him into old Hungary, postwar Austria and present-day Switzerland, to the Gulag camps in Siberia, onto a psychoanalyst's couch and into the living room of an Auschwitz survivor in Buenos Aires, and to an old family secret.
