In a large city in black Africa, little Toumani is sold by his father to become the slave of a cruel man who leaves him for dead in a sewer. He is rescued by Iman, a young mixed-race boy rejected by his mother. The two friends scrape by on friendship and schemes, but Iman has only one idea: to leave. Several voices tell the story over three generations, the sold child, an old woman paralysed by her faith, a rebel girl fighting to get out, a gentle and determined girl, while Iman himself never speaks, a symbol of the wish to flee and of a continent torn between two worlds.
