Through her marriage to Samuel Mikovíni, the outstanding cartographer, polymath and engineer in imperial service, the unusual Anna Regina comes to Banská Štiavnica in the first half of the eighteenth century, a mining town of many nations, dark, closed in its valley and gleaming with mined gold and silver. Because of her husband's standing she attracts attention and respect, but also amazement, envy and scandal: she even rides a horse herself. There she bears children and fights for her own face, her womanhood and her position, and for the attention and love of Samuel, who maps the country but cannot map himself and is kept ever busy by his work, his science and Empress Maria Theresa. Her ambition is to live in truth, love her husband and not give in to the town's narrow bourgeois world.
