Ramchand lost his parents as a child, and an uncle took what they left him. He works at Sevak Sari House, where Amritsar's well-off women shop and chat freely in front of a salesman they never really see, and at night returns to a cramped room in the old town. A delivery to the Kapoors, among the richest families in the city, opens a world he barely understands, and he sets out to remake himself, from fresh socks to English lessons out of used books. A second errand shows him a co-worker's brutal home and the man's wife, Kamla.
