A storm floods Lisbon. Beside the church of São Sebastião da Pedreira, a lawyer who lost his sight as an eight-year-old drops through an uncovered manhole, and a scout heading home from an event at the church is pulled in after him. While everything possible is done above ground to rescue them, the pair travel through the tunnels beneath the city, learning to depend on each other. Other stories join theirs: that of a stage magician called Seripe, which is Pires spelt backwards, the blind man's memories of his life before, and a chameleon that never manages the right colour.
