In diary form, a young officer recalls the year he led a small team of soldiers on the Beaufort, the hilltop outpost in Lebanon, before the Israeli army pulled out. Five years on, Liraz Liberti relives that last year in a cut-off outpost that ran on its own absurd logic and spoke its own slang. He remembers the medic who said he would give his life for him; Oshri, the sergeant closest to him, who promised to put a bullet in him if he ever lost an arm; Zitlawi, who made up words; Bailis, who gave up religion; Spitzer, who declaimed Shakespeare in the snow; and the friends who were killed. Through them speaks a whole generation of young soldiers who believed in brotherhood, longed for beaches on the other side of the world, and found that fear can be caught like an illness, and craved like a drug.
