Mia's father has died, a man who left her almost no warm memories, and still she grieves for him just as her wife Sally nears the end of her pregnancy. Emptying his home together with her sister brings up hard memories of their upbringing. Mia keeps wondering how to give a child what she herself never received, and whether her memories can be trusted at all. The novel shifts between conversations, reflection, scenes from the past and silent speeches to the dead man and the baby to come.
