The novel follows the Rinne family through the years. Hanna and Rippa's marriage outlasts many troubles before it wears out and they separate. Their children Aki and Liisa grow up lonely with their father amid rough barracks life, finding their sexuality and trying to understand themselves, against a closely observed recent Finnish past.
