Ichika is a second-year art-club student in Morioka when the 2011 earthquake strikes; her prefecture is hit, yet she cannot count herself among the victims. Asked to paint a picture of 'bonds' to cheer the stricken coast, she senses the reporter cares less about her work than about the hope a schoolgirl is meant to show. Over the next ten years, the novel collects the accounts of people putting into words what they thought could never be said.
