In a not-so-distant future, unchecked global warming and extreme water shortage have brought the world down, and 118,998 people, supposedly all that is left of humanity, live in a laboratory just above the ground. Its purpose is to program the first general artificial intelligence, with immense computing power and human consciousness: DAVE. The programmer Syz, an unreliable narrator, lives for code, eating and sleeping only to dive back into the data. Recruited by the dubious head of the lab to feed DAVE his memories, he falls in love with a young doctor just as DAVE threatens to fail completely, and begins to ask whom the machine will really serve.
