Gita Lauschmannová grew up happily in the village of Puklice, until her family, unaware they were even Jewish, was taken to the camps. In 1945, aged sixteen, she survives and rushes home, but her neighbours have seized the family's house and land and have no wish to see the returning children. Sixty years later, now a spirited elderly woman, Gita goes back one summer. She is not after the stolen property, only some symbolic redress for her father, yet the village closes ranks against her. Told in six chapters, each another attempt to come home, the novel asks whether wrongs this old can still be named and punished, and how hard it is for a whole community to admit its guilt.
