Beginning in the early 19th century, the novel follows several families scattered across the villages of the karisal bhoomi, the rain-fed black-soil tracts of southern Tamil Nadu, from Kalingal and Kazhugumalai to Sivakasi. At its heart is the friendship between Aandi, a farmer’s son from Kalingal, and Maari, a washerman’s son who pulls him out of quicksand when they are boys, and the lives of their wives, children and grandchildren. Around them farmers, washermen, toddy-tapping Nadars, landed squires and warriors of many castes live through more than a hundred years of caste animosity and recurring violence, which the story follows up to the Sivakasi riot of 1899 and beyond.
