Pirjo is fifty, Perttu thirty, and the two neighbours like nothing better than sharing wine of an evening. Perttu, a big man who works the door at a club, has lost his footing since his mother was moved into dementia care. In Pirjo's family each generation of women has passed its anxiety on to the next; her daughter Rita frets about Pirjo and about her own shaky stepfamily. When Perttu discovers belonging in the populist party Popula, the friendship splinters, and the party's xenophobia turns on Rita's stepdaughter Tuulia, a teenager adopted from Africa.
