It is 1994, and Peggy and Greta are trying to stay off drink. They attend meetings, phone Diane when they need help, volunteer at a Salvation Army shop, live on carrot sandwiches and sometimes sell sex. They seem to be one woman split into two. By 2006 they answer phones for a living and moderate a website while teaching themselves programming, until one day just one woman remains. In 2018 Margaret writes software that crunches numbers for a political group, fights to stay sober and checks an obsolete phone each day for messages, until she too becomes two. Across three decades of share houses, addiction and spreading technology, the novel looks at shame, loneliness and people society would rather not see.
