In a small Pacific coast village where the region's beauty and violence meet, and rich and poor, white and Black live side by side yet apart, Damaris has spent many years with Rogelio. Their stormy life together has been shaped by a long, fruitless attempt to have a child. When all hope is gone, the chance to adopt a puppy gives her a new attachment, one that forces her to think about instinct and motherhood.
