After the war Brodeck, a camp survivor, returns to his isolated mountain village in a small German-speaking land. Soon after, the villagers murder an outsider they name the Anderer, the Other, and since Brodeck is literate, they charge him with writing an account of it, hoping to be absolved. His inquiry exposes the villagers' buried past, and his own.
